The Aeon Mall of Humanity's Extinction — almost every restaurant is gone, and the one McDonald's left looks oddly ancient.
Signs from shops that pulled out are still hanging here. It's almost scary — welcome to Aeon Kanazawa.
It opened in 2000 as Kanazawa SATY. Thirty years on, it really shows its age.
Filming this on Saturday, July 4th — this arcade definitely has the fewest customers in all of Kanazawa.
Let's start on the first floor. This used to be a food court, but both sides are empty now — and get this—
Countless gacha machines, shutters that never go back up, and a McDonald's stuck in the past.
The second floor looks like this — clothes and other goods for sale. But past this white sheet is a sight that'll make you question your eyes.
Aeon shouldn't have a place like this. And here's the third floor — wasn't there an Aeon Cinema around here?
It's so dead that even the claw machines seem to feel sorry for you. This arcade, normally packed with families, is a ghost town.
Still, it is a pretty comfortable place to shop. So why did this become known as the Aeon Mall of Humanity's Extinction?
Because 15 minutes away by car, an even bigger complex, Aeon Mall Kahoku, was built. In short — it's self-cannibalization.
Aeon built its name as the suburban chain that drained customers from station-front shopping streets. But now it's Aeon itself losing customers to another store just like it.
On top of that, rural aging means fewer shoppers overall, making huge stores hard to sustain — people now prefer small, easy-to-browse supermarkets over sprawling buildings.
